Membership

Members welcome the opportunity of excellent, challenging fly fishing in this beautiful natural environment.

River Ure, Tanfield Angling Club, West Tanfield

We limit membership in order to provide solitude but also increase the possibility of catching good sized fish.

Although we have a limited membership, we do have a small number of places available each season and maintain a short membership waiting list. For more information about Tanfield Angling Club Membership please contact the Secretary.

In addition to great fishing we hold a small number of social events and invite some of the countries finest fly-fisherman to deliver masterclasses for our members. During the winter we have a fly tying group that meet in ‘The Bruce Arms’ once a month to develop their fly tying skills. The group includes seasoned professional tiers and total beginners.

“I re-joined Tanfield Angling club after a break of many years.  I received a really warm welcome and had a personal guided tour of the water. Although the club provides both salmon and trout fishing and some excellent grayling, I am there for the trout and the quality of the fishing in that regard is hard to beat. The water is extensive and varied, from a relatively lazy day,  to some distinctly challenging beats! The quality of the fish is also exceptional, with Robert, the river manager, totally on top of the job and providing  excellent fish for our sport from our hatchery. Tanfield caters for all manner of anglers.  Some chase the ‘ big cruisers’ in the deep pools.  Some just want a day of peace and quiet.  For myself I love the wild environment and the remoteness of some of the beats.”

“I joined Tanfield Angling Club at the start of the 2025 season after been on the waiting list for a relatively short period of time. Prior to becoming a member, I met with the committee for an informal chat to learn about the fishing and was made to feel instantly welcome. Every beat and pool provides different challenges and opportunities in a beautiful and peaceful setting, surrounded by wildlife. More often than not, our river keeper is usually around for a quick chat and to provide some tips. The fishing is exceptional for brown trout, and the abundance of grayling means that I can fly fish right through the winter months. In short, a very welcoming and friendly club with an amazing history and excellent fly fishing in beautiful surroundings”.

Angling is first and foremost the reason for joining any angling club, but other aspects of joining a club are equally as important. TAC has much to offer, a very social and knowledgeable membership, events throughout the year including tuition from some very respected anglers, fly tying evenings, working parties, BBQs to name but a few. Now into my second season with TAC and very much looking forward to casting a fly into those very “fishy” looking runs and pools.
